March On...!

Living Lent (and Loving Lent), with two children in college and one child in middle-school, has been a very interesting and a very self-revealing journey.

My motivation is stemming from another place, I am finding a different path to His grace.  I would not say that it is easier, in fact, it feels harder to keep to the traditions of the past.  Silence is always a good start.

"Speak, for your servant is listening."  1 Samuel 3:10

March is a month that is sometimes solemn, not in a grim or dour way, but in a ceremonious way.  March is a month of sincere preparation.

I love decorating my home for all the seasons and for all the major feast days.  It is a cue to remind me and my family what we should be celebrating, and what we should be focusing on.

This coming Easter will be extra special.  We are celebrating two very important events.  Preparing for the big day is exciting and joyous.

But First...we enter into the Easter Triduum, with whole-hearted faith.
However you may prepare, always remember to Keep Love in Lent.

May your Holy Week be filled with His Love, Mercy and Grace.

~ LIVING LENT, LOVING LENT: 2014 Link-Up ~

This is a re-post for quick ideas to Keep some Love in Lent

Living Lent, Loving Lent
That is what I say...

 Keep Love in Lent 2014
“I’m participating in the Keep LOVE in LENT Blog Link-Up 2014, hosted by the Catholic Bloggers Network,
We’ll be sharing different ways, tips, stories and real-life experiences that will help us focus on  Lenten sacrifices, prayer and good deeds
and how to carry them out with LOVE instead of a GRUMBLE.
Please visit any of these 6 hosts, to link your own Keep LOVE in LENT blog post!

I love our Lenten traditions and I am always looking for new ideas that keep our spiritual life moving towards sanctity.
My last years post can be found HERE, which covers:
+ LENTEN FASTING
+ LENTEN ALMSGIVING
+ LENTEN PRAYER & READING
and a + LIST OF GIVE UPS FOR LENT

I felt as if I did not have much time to savor the Ordinary Time season, although many wonderful activities were lived and enjoyed.  And while praying and searching for those few NEW ideas, I saw Lena's post over at Joy{filled Family}.  The Lent Calendar that she shares can be printed in three colors; but it was the Lenten Program Printable that really made me excited to try...the checklist format appeals to me in our particular 'family phase'.

PRAYER + FASTING + ALMS GIVING
 ~ LENTEN FASTING ~

There are certain things that I hope to do during this Lent:

Keep things Simple.   This includes (or excludes as appropriate):
+ prayers
+ devotions
+ meals
+ environment
+ activities
+ projects
+ goals
Spend more time Reading with my family.
Attend my Parish Lenten Retreat
Attend some part of my parish's 40 Hour Devotion
Participate in the LENT MEME over at Time For Reflections

I will personally be reading:
+ The Sacred Passion.  Luis De La Palma (Scepter)
+ Imitation of Christ - Thomas Kempis (H.M. Caldwell Co., Publishers. New York & Boston)

This year, I have asked my children to pick between 2 - 4 books to read during Lent.

Little Lamb (Fourth Grade) chose the following:
+ The Re-Found Veronica - Story of the Holy Face - Friar Carmine Cucinelli (Rector of the Basilica of the Holy Face of Manoppello {This was a Christmas gift from to our daughter, from which we brought home from our Rome pilgrimage in June 2013).  I will have to share some of the illustrations as the pencils & Colours are magnificent and beautifully done!
+ The Purples are Coming! - Ilow & Sheri Roque (Rock House Press)
+ A Book of Gratitude  5-2 (Seton Press)
+ This Is Our Family 1-2 (Seton Press)
+ The Story Tree 3-3 (Seton Press)
+ A Book of Friendliness - A Collection of the Prose & Poetry Which Has Helped to Better the World - Sister Mary Charlotte, R.S.M.; Sister Mary Brendan, R.S.M; Mary Synon 8-2 (Ginn & Co)

Butterfly (Ninth Grade) chose:
+ The Sacred Passion  Luis De La Palma (Scepter)
+ Divine Mercy in My Soul - St. Maria Faustina Kowalska Diary  (Marian Press)
+ Daily Meditations with the Holy Spirit - Minute Meditations for Every Day Containing a Scripture Reading, A Reflection, and a Prayer - Rev. Jude Winkler, OFM Conv.  (Catholic Book Publishing)
+ Holy Bible - RSV - Catholic Edition (Ignatius)

Conductor (Tenth Grade) chose:
+ The Young Man's Guide - Counsels, Reflections and Prayers for Catholic Young Men - Rev. F.X. Lasance (Benziger Brothers, Inc.)
+ TBD

Here are two videos that would be appropriate for Lent (the 'I Was There' dvd is geared towards middle school and up; 'The Miracle Maker' is appropriate for younger children...although there is a short part in the very beginning where a demon is cast out of a women, which is kinda creepy for littles).
+ The Miracle Maker (Family Home Entertainment)
+ I Was There (EWTN series)

~ pretty, happy, funny, real ~

~ Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life ~

Every Thursday at Like Mother, Like Daughter

{pretty}

I saw these {pretty} Station of the Cross Candles over at JOYfilled Family...

I thought they would be perfect to use for our Lenten Devotions; and since I had some {pretty} votive candles left over from our
CANDELORA Dinner, I decided to set Little Lamb to play work...

I assured Little Lamb that they would dry clear...

I placed them on mirrors...which really gives them a {pretty] amazing illumination,
adding to our LIVING LENT, LOVING LENT experience.

{happy}

This was one {happy} little girl!!
The Symphony can do that to a person, you know!?

We went with a group of our Home School friends...that can, also, make one {happy}.
A great time was had by all!

{funny}

Upon first glance, this looks like just a sweet little pup, legs crossed real "lady-like" peacefully at rest...
But with closer observation,
sharp, pointy teeth.  This is not a smile.

you will see that disturbing her or disturbing what she has in the clutches of her teeth, would not be wise!
Not {funny}.

{real}

Instructions before the Holy Mass

This is {real}.  Conductor has loved to serve the Mass ever since he could walk...and officially when he was about 7 years old.  He loves to teach other boys to serve with reverence and attentiveness.   It comes from his heart.  It is {real}.

He serves both at our parish and as an Episcopal Server...
Serving the Archbishop at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass during Lent
Praying that you are finding peace and love...this Lent.

Go to Like Mother, Like Daughter to find more contentment...

LIVING LENT, LOVING LENT

This is a re-post for several quick ideas to help keep some Love in Lent

I’m participating in the Keeping LOVE in LENT Blog Link-Up 2013, hosted by

Raising (& Teaching) Little Saints, Truly Rich Mom and Arma Dei: Equipping Catholic Families. We'll be sharing different ways, tips, stories and real-life experiences that will help us focus on Lenten sacrifices, prayer and good deeds, and how to carry them out with LOVE instead of a GRUMBLE. Please scroll down to the end of the post to see the list of link-up entries.”

Usually, I keep written assignments, work progress, etc, on our dry eraser board, which we keep in the hallway of our learning room area.  Impulsively, I erased everything and wrote these FOUR letters:

At the end of the day, when I walked passed the board, I noticed this added illustration (from Conductor, my 15 year old):

Thus begins our Lenten season.....

We make a list of our Lenten Commitments:

PRAYER + FASTING + ALMS GIVING

 ~ LENTEN FASTING ~
The evening (and week) before ASH WEDNESDAY, our family goes through our pantry 'using up' the 'excess'.

SHROVE TUESDAY, or Shrovetide, is the time used to prepare for LENT.

By 'using up' the 'excess' we are better able to keep to our Lenten Commitments or Promises - as it relates to fasting or abstinence.

My children LOVE Shrove Tuesday also known as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday!

We free ourselves from the "prohibited articles of diet", therefore keeping a simpler fare, allowing us to keep our focus more on CHRIST (and less on 'ourselves').
Living Lent:  Abstain from meat on Wednesday AND Fridays.

As a mother and preparer of meals...food is a big deal in our house, which comprises a decent portion of our days activities, time, mindset and effort.

We begin Ash Wednesday with the Holy Mass and usually have
LENTIL SOUP as our 'one full meal'.

Before...

Zucchini, spinach, carrots, fingerling potatoes....whatever we have on hand...and lentils!

After!
Soupe du jour ~ Soup of the Day! Worth the Wait.
Living Lent:  The Code of Canon Law and our bishops remind us of other Works of Mercy and means of doing penance:  prayer, acts of self-denial, alms giving and works of personal charity.

I used one of my favorite cookbooks "Twelve Months of Monastery Soups" by Brother Victor-Antoine d'Avila-Latourrette.   Everything in this cookbook comes out delicious; a must have cookbook!

Some traditions include making Hot Cross Buns

and Pretzels, as well as RESURRECTION ROLLS for EASTER...

~ LENTEN ALMS GIVING ~
CREATE FOR ME A CLEAN HEART ~ and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
                                                                                                             ~ Psalm 51:10

"We Will Give Something Up To Lift Others Up!"
Our family participates in the RICE BOWL project, through Catholic Relief Services, that helps those in need;
and by giving food items to the St. Vincent de Paul Society through our parish.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS ON FRIDAYS, AFTER THE HOLY MASS.

QUARANT'ORE ~ FORTY HOURS DEVOTION
We began 40 hour devotion in our parish for Lent, two years ago.  Continuous prayer before the (exposed) Blessed Sacrament...an ideal time for the sacrament of Confession is after you have had time to reflect in front of Our Lord:  Gazing upon him in both the Monstrance and on the Cross...

We helped our pastor to organized a 40 hour devotion...a true spiritual retreat!
Refreshments for the late night adorers...

BITTER LAMENTATIONS ~ LENTEN LAMENTATIONS
(my personal favorite...this devotion was introduced to us by our pastor)

Ancient chants retracing the Passion and Crucifixion of Christ; The devotion incorporates prose and verse, chant and reading, prayer and meditation, inviting participants to reflect on the mystery of Christian redemption, the Passion and death of the Christ.

The Lamentations take the shape of a three-part cycle; one part is sung each Sunday afternoon service. Each of the three parts has a parallel form and structure, with repeated musical motifs.

The Lamentations highlight the very emotional nature of Christian spirituality, inviting a personal identification with the Suffering Lord and His Mother. The devotion is followed by Benediction and Holy Mass.

~ LENTEN PRAYER & READING ~
These are some of the books that we will be reading this Lenten season:
EVENING VESPERS, WEEKDAYS AND SUNDAYS

ON LOVE:

ON THE HOLY FATHERS...since we heard the news of Pope Benedict XVI's resignation, we began reading THE POPES:  - an amazing book on the full list of the Popes, compiled by the Prefect of the Vatican Archives, Monsignor Angelo Mercati, published for the first time, by the Holy See in its 1947 Yearbook.  I have the sixth edition, expanded, printed in 1999.

Did you know that the word "amen" in religious ceremonies is attributed to St. Clement I's time (88-97) as well as the "Dominus Vobiscum" (The Lord be with you) said at the beginning of Mass?

ON FORTY DAYS...learning LOVE for God's Word, in short story form.

LENTEN BASKET ~ Filled with Books, Movie, & Purple cloth to cover Saint Statues & Crucifix (during Holy Week)

SACRIFICE JAR ~ SMALL DEEDS DONE WITH GREAT LOVE:
My children will drop a bean in a jar with every prayer, good work, sacrifice...at the end of the Lenten season, they are replaced with JELLY BEANS!!

MORE MOVIES:

A Family Retreat with Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen is highly recommended, there are plenty of wonderful films appropriate for viewing during the Lenten Season

CLEANING HEART, SOUL & HOUSE:

Keeping our 'Liturgical Supplies' organized, helps us to Live Lent..as well as Easter, Advent, Christmas...

these removable hooks are both practical and time-savers

Keep LOVE in LENT
